Thomasma's Last-Minute Goal Lifts WMU Into MAC Tournament

TOLEDO, Ohio – Tied 2-2 late in the game, Western Michigan freshman midfielder Heidi Thomasma stole the ball from a Toledo defender just outside the right corner of the box and lofted a shot over the UT goalie and into the net to send the WMU women's soccer team to the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The Broncos will head to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the MAC Quarterfinals.

"I couldn't be more proud of our players and the true resilience they all showed today in a difficult game," said head coach Lewis Robinson. "We have shown real character in the face of a lot of adversity this season and it showed again today. A big goal of ours this season was to get back into the MAC Tournament mix, so it's a great step towards that. We are excited for Sunday and ready for the next challenge at Bowling Green.

Western Michigan went down 1-0 early in the game, with former Bronco Morgan Otteson scoring in the ninth minute on a counter attack. WMU went into the second half trailing 1-0 but tied it up just 2:25 into the second half on a goal by Emily Pagett. Pagett was played behind the Toledo back line and fired a shot from the top-right corner of the box and into the left side of the net for her second goal of the season.

WMU took the lead in the 56th minute on a goal by Jaden Peck. A corner kick was served in and there was a scrum in front of the net to clear the ball. The ball was kicked around until it popped out to the left side of the net and Peck pounced on it, putting it in the net for her third goal of the season and third straight game with a goal.

Toledo, once again, scored on the counter attack, this time with Kaema Maachree scoring to tie it up at 2-2 in the 60th minute.

The Broncos outshot the Rockets 15-8 overall and had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. WMU also had a staggering 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.

WMU and BGSU met earlier this season in Kalamazoo with the two teams battling to a 2-2 tie.
