Women's Soccer's Comeback Bid Falls Short at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision at Ohio in its penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday.

Jaden Peck and Jenna Blackburn tallied goals for the Broncos (4-8-5, 4-4-2 MAC). WMU outshot OU 21-13 overall and had an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Ohio took an early lead on Abby Townsend's first two goals on the day, finishing off a cross from Regan Berg right in front of the net in the 14th minute. The Bobcats then added to their lead with a goal by Olivia Darrow in the 42nd minute.

WMU turned up the pressure in the second half and finally broke through in the 65th minute. After a long goal kick by Hannah Sargent, the Ohio back line and keeper had a miscommunication and the WMU jumped on it. Emily Pagett won the scramble to the ball and passed it off to Peck, who slotted it into the net for her second goal of the weekend.

The Bobcats responded minutes later on the counter attack with Townsend getting her second of the day from the left side of the box.

WMU earned a penalty kick in the 75th minute, with Blackburn stepping up to bury the penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season.

The Broncos had several chances as the game dwindled, but were unable to find the back of the net to tie the game.

Western Michigan heads on the road to wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Toledo.
