CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team heads into the third day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regionals at the University of Illinois on Saturday.
The Broncos kicked things off on Thursday with the singles qualifying draw.
Jackson Boone picked up an opening-round win over Guy Dagan from Northern Illinois 6-2, 6-1. Advancing to the Round of 32 he then defeated Kade Mindry from Cleveland State 7-5, 6-4 to advance to Friday.
Ferdinand Schlueter was also in action, falling to Illinois-Chicago's Gustave Schwebel 6-4, 6-2.
Boone opened Friday's singles action falling to Mattias Olivero from Toledo in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 4-6.
The rest of Friday's action was n the main doubles draw. All four WMU doubles teams advanced out of the Round of 64. Boon and
Benjamin George defeated the duo of Lee and Arrastia from NIU 8-2, Peter Kusyznski and
Fynn Lohse downed UIC's Stranberg and Cvejtan 8-2, Schlueter and
Brogan Pierce won a tight match with Eastern Illinois' Pilopovic and Riera, 8-6, and
Arjun Honnappa and
Anton Arzhankin also won a tight 8-6 match against Illinois State's Hjalte and Dibidox.
Honnappa and Arzhankin were the Broncos' only doubles team to advance out of the Round of 32, with an 8-3 win over NIU's Knutson and Norlin. The duo then fell to Huber and Minasyan from Wisconsin, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Saturday's action brings the main singles draw for Western Michigan. Kuszynski opens against Mikael Erler from Cleveland State, George takes on Lucas Horve from Illinois, Honnappa takes onAndrew Lutschaunig (14 seed) from Ohio State, Arzhankin will face off against David Saye from Michigan State,
Brogan Pierce takes on 11th-seeded Alex Petrov from Illinois, and
Fynn Lohse is matched up with Kenta Miyoshi from Illinois.
