OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan defense picked up seven sacks and held Miami to a season-low 10 points to pick up a 16-10 road win over the RedHawks on Saturday.
The victory halted Miami's 16-game home winning streak at Yager Stadium. Prior to Saturday, MU's previous loss at Yager Stadium was a 40-39 defeat at the hands of the Broncos back in 2018.
The seven sacks tied a season-best for the Bronco defense, while the 305 yards of total offense allowed was the second-lowest total surrendered by WMU thus far in 2022. It marked the fewest offensive yards given up by Western Michigan in a conference game since the MAC opener at Buffalo last season.
Corvin Moment had a career-high 3.5 sacks to lead the attack, with
Andre Carter adding 1.5 sacks to the WMU cause.
Zaire Barnes and
Bricen Garner recorded a team-high eight tackles apiece, while Moment and Carter each had seven. Three of Carter's seven tackles were for a loss, and the redshirt junior also forced a fumble.
True freshman
Treyson Bourguet got the start at quarterback for the Broncos (3-5, 2-2 MAC), making him the third true freshman to start at quarterback for Western Michigan since 2005, joining Tim Hiller (2005) and
Kaleb Eleby (2018). In his debut, Bourguet went 16-for-33 through the air for 123 yards, and added 25 yards on the ground.
Sean Tyler ran for 110 yards on 22 carries, his second 100-yard rushing game of the season and sixth of his WMU career.
Jehlani Galloway was Bourguet's favorite target, as he snagged a career-high six balls for 51 yards.
Trailing 3-0 near the midway point of the second quarter, the Broncos embarked on an 11-play, 46-yard drive, which ended in a career-long 52-yard field goal by
Palmer Domschke. After forcing Miami (3-5, 1-3 MAC) to punt, WMU was able to get into field goal range once again, and Domschke connected from 46 yards out to send WMU into the locker on top, 6-3.
Western Michigan forced MU to punt again on its first drive of the second half, and then drove it 80 yards in 11 plays to extend the lead. Tyler carried it the final 20 to pick up his fourth rushing touchdown of the season. Domschke hit his third field goal of the day on the next drive to extend the margin to 16-3 heading into the final quarter.
In the early stages of the fourth quarter, Miami went for it on fourth down inside the WMU 10 and converted for a touchdown, trimming the Bronco advantage to 16-10.
After the two teams traded punts, Western Michigan got the ball back at its own 9-yard line with 4:24 to play. Tyler ripped off a 26-yard run to help the Broncos gain some breathing room and force the RedHawks to exhaust their timeouts.
Miami got the ball back at its own nine with 1:49 to go. The RedHawks drove to the Western Michigan 34, and three straight incompletions brought up fourth-and-10 with nine ticks remaining. On fourth down, Carter got a hand on MU quarterback Brett Gabbert's pass to knock it away and seal the victory for the Broncos.
Western Michigan returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 2, as it visits Bowling Green at 7 pm. The contest will air on ESPN2.
