Broncos Fall Short at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Western Michigan football team fell short on the road at Bowling Green on Wednesday night, 13-9, at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.

WMU (3-6, 2-3 MAC) had the ball deep in BGSU territory late in the fourth quarter after true-freshman Treyson Bourguet connected with Corey Crooms on a 48-yard reception. After two incompletions, Bourguet rushed down to the BGSU 19 to set up a fourth and two. The Falcons brought the rush and the Bourget dump it off to Jehlani Galloway, but he was stopped short of the first down. From there, Bowling Green ran the clock out.

Western Michigan's defense held BGSU's vaunted offense to just 291 total yards, forcing three turnovers via fumbles and recording four sacks. Bricen Garner and Delano Ware each had a team-high nine tackles. Ware stripped BGSU tight end Christian Sims on the goal line in the third quarter, with Zaire Barnes recovering it to prevent a touchdown. Keni-H Lovely had a career-high seven tackles and three tackles for loss.

In his second career start, Bourguet threw for 191 yards on 16 completions and his collegiate touchdown pass. Crooms led all receivers with a season-high 151 yards on eight receptions and a touchdown, while junior running back Sean Tyler rushed for 93 yards on 26 attempts.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bowling Green took a 3-0 lead on a 24-yard field goal by Mason Lawler at 12:54 in the second quarter. Lawler added a second field goal with 1:45 remaining in the first half, this time from 28 yards out.

The Broncos got on the board late in the third quarter when Bourguet hit Crooms over the middle. The junior wide receiver made two Falcons miss and then ran the rest of the way into the endzone or the 39-yard touchdown. A bad snap on the extra point led to WMU cutting the lead to 13-6.

WMU drove down the field again in the fourth quarter with a first and goal from the BGSU 8-yard line. A short pass and then an botched snap led to a fourth and goal from the 14 and Palmer Domschke hitting a 31-yard field goal to cut the lead to 13-9.

Western Michigan returns home to continue midweek MACTION next Wednesday, hosting Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU and tickets are available at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets.
