WMU Drops Season-Opener at UAA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The 12th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team dropped its season opener, X-X, on the road at Alaska-Anchorage late Saturday night.

The lone goal for the Broncos (0-1-0) came from Jamie Rome in the first period. WMU outshot UAA 22-11 on the night, including holding them to just one shot in the third period. The Seawolves recorded 22 blocked shots on the night to stifle the WMU attack.

Alaska-Anchorage took a 1-0 lead at 13:37 in the first period on a goal by Connor Marritt from out in front of the net after Cameron Rowe made the initial save.

WMU tied it up less than a minute later on a power play goal by Rome. Carter Berger had the puck on the right point and passed it to freshman forward Ryan McAllister at the right point. McAllister then dished it off to Rome in the right circle for a one-timer into the net.

The Seawolves pushed ahead, 2-1, at 13:57 in the second period. The Broncos were called for two penalties, giving UAA a 5-on-3 for two minutes. WMU weathered the storm for the first minute but William Gilson scored from the center point.

Maxmillion Helgeson added to the lead just 1:41 into the third period, finishing off a pass by Matt Allen to give the Seawolves a 3-1 lead.

The Broncos put the pressure on and pulled Rowe with 3:10 remaining but were unable to find the net.

The two teams face off again on Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET. The game can be watched live at Youtube.com/UAASeawolves and heard live on the Bronco Media Network.
