Broncos Down Zips in Straight Sets

AKRON, Ohio – The Western Michigan volleyball team closed out its three-match road trip with a straight-set victory (25-23, 25-15, 25-13) at Akron on Saturday afternoon.

Logan Case handed out 40 assists to fuel a Western Michigan offense which hit .366 for the afternoon, its second-best attack percentage of the season. Case extended her streak of 30 or more assists to 30 consecutive matches.
 
Abi Wilcoxson led the Broncos with 12 kills on a .474 hitting percentage, with Keona Salesman adding 10 while hitting .321 and Amanda Glanton pitching in nine on a .400 hitting percentage. Andelyn Simkins collected 13 digs, putting the junior in double-digits for the seventh consecutive match.
 
Western Michigan enjoyed a 9-3 advantage in total blocks and a 5-1 edge in services aces. Kennedy Hogan (1 solo, 4 assists) and Wilcoxson (five assists) contributed a team-best five blocks apiece.
 
After using a five-point run to move ahead 8-6, Akron led for the majority of the first set. With the Zips on top 20-16, WMU put together a 5-1 run to even the frame at 21-21. Akron took the next point, but Western Michigan grabbed four of the ensuing five to rally and win the first set, 25-23.
 
The Broncos charged out to a 7-2 advantage to begin the second frame. With the margin at 13-8, Western Michigan put together another 7-2 run to up its lead to 20-10 and put the second set beyond reach.
 
WMU again opened up a big cushion at the start of the third set, claiming nine of the frame's first 11 points. The Zips trimmed the margin to five, 11-6, but an 8-2 surge pushed the lead into double-digits, 19-8, and the Broncos cruised from there to complete the straight-set victory.
 
Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo next weekend to begin a four-match homestand. The Broncos begin their homestand on Friday evening at 6 pm against Miami. Tickets for all WMU home volleyball matches can be purchased at wmubroncos.com/tickets.
