Western Michigan Powers Past Miami in Straight Sets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team hit a season-best .372 on Friday night as it rolled to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Miami on Friday evening at University Arena.

WMU's Maggie King hammered down a team-high 19 kills on a .438 hitting percentage, with Keona Salesman adding 13 while hitting .417. Abi Wilcoxson contributed eight kills on a .571 hitting percentage. Logan Case fueled the Bronco attack with a match-high 41 assists. Andelyn Simkins registered 18 digs to lead the Western Michigan defense, while King picked up nine digs to fall just shy of a double-double.
 
Miami held a slim 7-5 edge in the early going of the first set, but Western Michigan used a 6-2 run to move in front, 11-9. With WMU's advantage at 17-14, the Broncos notched three in a row to force the RedHawks into a timeout. Following the timeout, Western Michigan tallied five consecutive points to claim the first set, 25-15.
 
The Broncos continued the momentum into the second frame, grabbing seven of the first eight points on the way to a 10-3 start. MU got no closer than six for the remainder of the set, as Western Michigan hit a blistering .531 in the frame to cruise to a 2-0 match advantage.  
 
WMU again came out fast in the third set, as an early 6-0 run helped the Broncos open up an 8-2 lead. Another six-point spurt helped Western Michigan extend the margin to 16-5. At 21-10, Miami reeled off five in a row to trim the margin back to six, 21-15. The RedHawks were within six again at 23-17, but Salesman tallied back-to-back kills to seal WMU's second consecutive straight-set victory.
