Passolt Wins it in OT for Third-Ranked Broncos

DULUTH, Minn. -- Western Michigan fifth-year senior Josh Passolt netted the game-winning goal 1:51 into overtime to push the third-ranked Broncos over No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth, 3-2, at AMSOIL Arena on Saturday night.

Passolt got the puck from Michael Joyaux and skated into the UMD zone along the left wall. He pushed up into the left circle and earned himself some space with a toe-drag before firing it off the left post and into the net for his second goal of the night and the winner. Joyaux tallied his second assist of the night and his 19th of the season, while freshman forward Max Sasson picked up a helper to extend his career-best point streak to five games.

The Broncos (17-6-0, 9-5-0 NCHC) were down 2-1 heading into the third period but with 1:22 of a power play carrying over from the second period. Towards the tail-end of the man advantage Ronnie Attard tied the game up at 2-2 with his eight goal of the season. Drew Worrad found him alone in the left circle and Attard fired a wrist shot bar-down for the game-tying goal. Joyaux also picked up an assist, while Worrad tallied his team-leading 24th of the season.

Junior goalie Brandon Bussi made 28 saves on the night, including 12 in the second period. WMU was outshot 30-19 overall on the night, going 1-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Minnesota-Duluth took the early lead with a goal by Noah Cates on a rebound off a shot by Casey Gilling at 14:44 in the first period.

Western Michigan tied it up at 1-1 on Passolt's first goal of the night, a short-handed effort at 7:20 in the second period. Cole Gallant won the puck off the boards in the UMD zone after WMU had cleared the zone. Passolt then won a loose puck and skated into the slot for a back-hander the put past Ryan Fanti and into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Connor Kelley scored from the slot on the power play at 16:11 to give the lead back to the Bulldogs near the end of the second.

Western Michigan heads back on the road to take on Colorado College next Friday and Saturday night. Friday's puck drop is at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday's is set for 8 p.m. Both games can be watched live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
