COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior defenseman
Ronnie Attard netted his second career hat trick as the fifth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team rolled past Colorado College, 8-2, on the road at Robson Arena on Friday night.
Attard also added an assist for a four-point night but his defensive partner
Aidan Fulp had a career-high with four assists. Freshman
Max Sasson continued his tear with his first career four-point game after netting two goals and tallying two assists.
Josh Passolt also a three-point night after tallying three assists, while
Hugh Larkin,
Ty Glover and
Jason Polin each had a goal.
Brandon Bussi made 19 saves in net to pick up his 18th win of the season.
Western Michigan reached 50 shots for the second time this season, outshooting Colorado College 51-22. The Bronco power play stayed hot, going 5-for-7 on the night and the penalty kill held the Tigers scoreless on four chances.
Attard got the Broncos on the board early with a goal just 2:15 into the game.
Ethen Frank picked up a loose puck in the CC zone and found Attard in the slot for the one-timer into the net. The goal was Attard's ninth of the season and Frank tallied his eighth assist as WMU took a 1-0 lead.
Sasson scored Western Michigan's first power play goal of the night at 5:11 in the first period to push the lead to 2-0. Bussi played the puck up to Fulp and Fulp found Sasson in the neutral zone. The freshman skated in on net with a burst of speed and his shot got under the leg pad of Matt Vernon and slid across the line for Sasson's sixth goal of the season. Fulp picked up his fifth assist of the season and Bussi tied his career high with his third.
Larkin made it 3-0 on a power play goal at 18:18, finishing from out in front of the net after a pass from
Luke Grainger. Larkin's goal was his second of the season, with Grainger tallying his fourth assist and
Chad Hillebrand picking up his fifth.
Attard set up Sasson in the slot to give Western Michigan a 4-0 lead at 4:06 in the second period. The goal was Sasson's seventh of the season, with Attard picking up his 17th assist and Fulp notching his sixth.
The Philadelphia Flyer's draft pick scored his second of the night, this time on the power play at 10:17. Attard got the puck from Fulp in the left circle and fired it into the pack of the net to make it 5-0. Fulp recorded his third assist of the night and Passolt picked up his first and 13th of the season.
Attard completed his second hat trick of the season with another blast on the power play from the left circle at 10:10 in the third period to push the lead to 6-0. Fulp and Passolt also assisted on the goal.
Colorado College's Jackson Jutting tucked one under the crossbar to end the shutout bid for the Broncos at 12:34, cutting the lead to 6-1.
Sasson set up Glover minutes later to extend the lead to 7-1 at 12:34. Sasson found Glover alone at the back post for his fifth goal of the season, with Sasson tallying his sixth assist and
Jacob Bauer picking up his second of the season.
Polin added a power play goal at 18:57 on assists from Sasson and Passolt before Patrick Cozzi scored with 4.5 seconds to play to set the final at 8-2.
