DAYTON, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's soccer team wrapped up its exhibition season with a 1-1 tie at Wright State on Saturday evening.
The two teams battle for the 90 minutes and then played an additional 20-minutes, in which the Broncos won 1-0.
Ethan Brandt played all 110 minutes making two saves, while WMU picked up goals from Connor Burkett and Jordan Walker. The Broncos outshot the Raiders 21-6 overall, landing nine of them on target.
"It was a tough and competitive exhibition," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "Exactly what we were looking for heading into the regular season opener against Virginia. We created many quality looks at goal. We had some saved, we narrowly missed a few and then we probably had many we would like to have back. I would have liked to see us reward ourselves for the territory we won and possession we had by putting one of those chances in the back of the net."
Burkett gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute, finishing off a chance after some great ball movement.
WSU tied it up at 1-1 just 1:26 into the second half on a goal by Presten Manthey.
"I was disappointed with how we started the second half, conceding what I thought was a soft goal in the opening minutes. We have to be better at starting and finishing halves."
Although the Broncos surrendered the early goal they shut down the Raiders in the second half, allowing just two total shots.
Walker scored on a penalty kick in the additional 20-minute period.
"It's been a great preseason," added Wiseman. "We have gotten better, our fitness is at a good spot and it's time to start playing for some matches that count!"
The Broncos head down to Charlottesville to take on the seven-time NCAA National Champions on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game can be watched live on ACC Network Extra.
