JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Western Michigan senior thrower
Aniya Davis is set to represent the Western Michigan track and field program at the 2021 Outdoor NCAA East Preliminary Championships at the University of North Florida on Saturday afternoon.
Davis will compete in the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. Live coverage of the meet is available here.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., native enters the weekend's contest ranked 14th in the East and will need to finish in the top 12 to advance to the semifinals at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12 at the University of Oregon. Davis' qualifying distance of 180' 2" (54.91m) came on April 30 at the Grand Valley State Extra Weekend Meet. The distance was a new personal-best and broke WMU's program record, most recently set back in 2014 by Andrea Hiler.Â
Davis started fast out of the gate with a personal-best to open the season at Miami University's Blizzard Buster meet, throwing 164' 2" (50.03m) for the first of four wins in the discus. She is the first discus thrower to compete at the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Championships for the Broncos since Stephanie Negrete back in 2015.
