Baseball Preps for Final Road Series at Kent State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the hunt for a Mid-American Conference regular season title the Western Michigan baseball team hits the road for this final time this season to square off with Kent State, May 21-23.

Scouting the Broncos
With eight games remaining in the regular season Western Michigan enters its final road series with an overall record of 20-22 and 19-13 in conference play. The Broncos are
coming off a series victory over in-state rival Central Michigan last weekend and have won or split each of their last seven MAC series.

Not So Flash
WMU seeks its first series victory over Kent State since 1998. The Broncos have lost 12 straight series against the Golden Flashes and are just 3-7 against Kent State in the last 10 meetings. Western Michigan leads the overall series 82-76.

Stealing The Record Book
Junior Connor Charping has 25 stolen bases this season, tied for the fourth most in a single-season in school history. With eight games remaining Charping is just seven stolen bases away from breaking the school record.

Consistent Winning
The Broncos have now won at least 20 games in five of the past seven seasons. WMU has also clinched double-digit wins in eight of the last nine years.

Two is Better than One
Within the MAC the Broncos rank second in the conference with 82 doubles. 

MAC Success
WMU's 19 MAC victories this season is the most conference wins under head coach Billy Gernon. The 19 conference wins is also the most since notching 20 back in 1999.

Mullen Them Down
Senior RHP Will Mullen is holding opponents to a .225 batting average this season,  the ninth lowest mark in the MAC.

Crafty Veteran
Will Mullen has been dominant out of the bullpen for the Broncos posting a 6-1 record with a 3.38 ERA in 45.1 innings of work. Mullen's six victories is tied for the fourth most in the conference.

Scouting the Opponent
Kent State enters the weekend with an overall record of 24-23 and 17-15 in MAC play. The Golden Flashes are coming off a series split at Ball State last weekend and haven't dropped a conference series since April 16-18 at Central Michigan.

Offensively Kent State leads the MAC with a team batting average of .290 and is led by the duo of Collin Mathews and Ben Carew. Mathews leads the Golden Flashes in batting average (.365) and RBIs (36) while Carew leads KSU in runs (42) and home runs (7).

On Kent State has a 5.45 team ERA and is led by RHP Luke Albright. Albright in 13 games started has a 6-4 record with a 2.69 ERA and 96 strikeouts. Opponents against Albright are hitting just .204.
