KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan softball team concludes its 2021 campaign this weekend with a four-game, Mid-American Conference series at Kent State. The series opens Friday, May 14, at 3 p.m. ET. The teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday, May 15, at 1 p.m. ET and conlude the series Sunday, May 16, at Noon ET.
| Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan (14-34, 10-24 MAC) enters having won two of its last three contests and three of the last five games. The Broncos are led by a trio of seniors playing their final games in the brown and gold this weekend. Mackenize Swinehart leads the team with a .399 batting average and nine homers.
Sydney Stefanick is second on the team with a .333 average, as well as a team-leading 24 RBI.
Kaylen Glenfield is hitting .301 and her 21 RBI rank second on the team. In the circle,
Reily Galloway and Stefanick have combined to win 10 of WMU's 14 victories this season. Galloway leads the team with a 4.38 ERA and 74 strikeouts.
Swinehart has a few program records in her sights this weekend as she concludes her career. Already the program's career leader in games played, she is looking to become the second Bronco ever with a season batting average above .400, while her career batting average of .359 would rank second all-time. She is also one home run shy of 10 for the year, which would make her the fifth Bronco with a 10-plus-home-run season. Stefanick is right behind Swinehart in the career batting average category, with her .353 average currently slotting her fourth all-time. Stefanick also enters the weekend with 85 career RBI and a chance to finish third all-time at WMU.
| Scouting the Golden Flashes
Kent State (24-25, 20-15) hosts WMU coming off a doubleheader sweep of Akron. The Flashes enter the weekend in third place in the MAC standings and are led by Kennadie Goth and Brooklyn Whitt at the plate. Goth is batting .385 on the season with a .418 on-base percentage, while Whitt is hitting .370 and reaches base at a .439 clip. Megan Turner leads teh team with 35 RBI and eight homers. In the circle, Jessica LeBeau has started 24 games and boasts a 13 victories with a 2.90 ERA and 195 strikeouts.Â
