Opitz Breaks Singles Record as WMU Downs Butler, 7-0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan senior Jannik Opitz became the all-time leader in career singles wins for the WMU Men's Tennis team as the Broncos downed Butler, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Sorensen Courts.
 
The record came late in singles play as Opitz defeated Thomas Brennan 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 1 as the fourth finisher to put the Broncos up 5-0. The win gave the Hildescheim, Germany native the 116th of his career, surpassing Michael Calderone's record of 115. The record now gives Opitz the program all-time marks for career total wins, career doubles wins and career singles wins. All three records have been achieved this season.
 
The Broncos (17-1, 5-0 MAC) swept doubles play with Arjun Honnappa and Joaquin Caballer defeating Ryan Roegner and Michael Karr, 6-1, at No. 2. The duo of Fynn Lohse and Jack Randall at No. 3 secured the point for WMU with a win against Alvaro Huet Vadillo and Drew Michael, 6-2. Opitz and Zac Faveri completed the sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 1 over Brennan and Michael Dickson.
 
Benjamin George led off singles play with a win at No. 6 over Roegner 6-0, 6-1. The second finisher was Brogan Pierce at No. 5, putting WMU up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Karr. The Broncos pulled sealed the win after going ahead 4-0, with Fynn Lohse defeated Dickson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2. Opitz pushed the lead to 5-0 with his record-breaking victory, while Jackson Boone made it 6-0 with a three-set win over Michael 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Honnappa wrapped up the sweep with a win at No. 4 over Vadillo 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
 
Western Michigan takes a trip to New York next week, battling Buffalo on Friday and Binghamton on Sunday.
