Men's Tennis Hosts NIU in De Facto MAC Title Match

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team can secure the program's 26th Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship on Saturday as it hosts Northern Illinois at West Hills Athletic Club at 1 p.m.
 
The matchup between the two top programs in the MAC this season with the Broncos a perfect 8-0 record in MAC play and NIU with a 7-1 conference record and its only loss coming at the hands of WMU. The two teams met back on April 2 in DeKalb, with Western Michigan coming away with a 6-1 win on the day.

The Broncos have won their last 14 matches and have only given up three points in one of them.
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
After falling to WMU, Northern Illinois has won its last four matches beating Niagara 6-1, Buffalo 5-2, Toledo 6-1 and Bal State 5-2. The Huskies are 8-1 on the road this season.
 
Oliver Valentinsson has a team-high 19 wins in singles play this season with a 19-2 record overall. He has seven wins each at No. 4 and No. 5 and is also 4-0 at No. 3. Bor Schweiger Muzar has played all 20 of his matches at No. 1, posting a 14-6 record this season. Valentinsson and Kristopher Ortega are 17-4 in doubles play, with a 4-0 record at No. 2 and a 13-4 record at No. 3. Schweiger Muzar and Mikael Vollbach have played the most together at No. 1, posting a 6-4 record on the season.
 
ON THE HORIZON
If the Broncos win the title outright or have the advantage over the Huskies due to tie-breakers, WMU will represent the MAC at the NCAA Tournament. No MAC Tournament will be played this year due to COVID-19 changes.
