CLEVELAND –  The Mid-American Conference announced its Academic All-Conference honors on Tuesday with five Western Michigan volleyball student-athletes earning the academic recognition.
Charley Andrews,
Rachel Bontrager,
Maggie King,
Meredith Phillips and
Cassandra Smigiel earned Academic All-MAC honors, marking the eighth year in a row Western Michigan volleyball has had at least three Academic All-MAC honorees. The five student-athletes is the most for WMU since having six back in 2018.
Under head coach
Colleen Munson, the Broncos have had 53 Academic All-MAC selections to go along with five CoSIDA Academic All-District and one CoSIDA Academic All-American.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
For the third year in a row senior
Rachel Bontrager earned Academic All-MAC honors after posting a 3.71 GPA in Elementary Professional Education. Bontrager adds to her list of recognitions during her senior campaign as the senior outside hitter was named MAC Player of the Year and First Team All-MAC.
Bontrager also became the first player since 1992 to be named to the AVCA Midwest All-Region team. The Valparaiso, Ind., native led the MAC with 4.62 kills per set while ranking first in points per set (5.01) and ninth in hitting percentage (.319).
Junior
Meredith Phillips earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second year in a row after registering a 3.68 GPA in Biomedical Science. On the court Phillips played in 18 matches and ranked third on the Broncos with 114 kills. Phillips averaged 2.38 kills per set and ranked fifth on the team with a .247 attack percentage.
Sophomore
Maggie King was named Academic All-MAC after completing the semester with a stellar 3.94 GPA in Child & Family Development. This season King earned First Team All-MAC honors after ranking eighth in the conference in kills (255) and kills per set (3.64). The Cincinnati, Ohio native recorded double-digit kills in 15 of WMU's 21 matches including the final 11 matches.
Senior
Cassandra Smigiel earned the academic recognition after earning a 3.26 GPA in Engineering Design Technology. Smigiel in 15 matches this season posted 74 kills, averaging 1.54 per set while registering a .244 attack percentage. Smigiel in 48 sets also posted 23 digs to go along with 28 blocks, averaging 0.58 per set.
Redshirt junior
Charley Andrews became the fifth Bronco to earn Academic All-MAC honors, posting a 3.69 GPA in Exercise Science. Andrews was one of four Broncos to have over 100 kills this season and led the team with a .349 attack percentage. Andrews also ranked second on the team with 37 blocks, averaging 0.67 per set.
