KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 7-0 in Mid-American Conference play after taking down Ball State 4-3, at WMU's Sorensen Courts on Friday afternoon.
The match went down to the wire. The Broncos (19-1, 7-0 MAC) were leading 3-2, with matches at No. 3 and No. 5 still left to finish. At No. 3 the match went into a third set after Chris Adams took the second set 6-4 over
Fynn Lohse.
Arjun Honnappa won his first set 7-6 (7-5) over Eli Herran at No. 5 and then battled back from a 6-5 deficit to force another tie-breaker. Herran took a 5-3 advantage before Honnappa tied it up at 5-5. The sophomore then sealed the victory for the Broncos with an 8-6 win in the tie-breaker.
Senior
Jannik Opitz made short work at No. 1 to push WMU's lead to 2-0 after defeating Thibault De Negri 6-2, 6-0. Freshman
Benjamin George won at No. 6 to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead after beating Parrish Simmons 6-1, 6-3.
The Broncos claimed the doubles point after Lohse and
Jack Randall defeated De Negri and Simmons 6-4, and
Joaquin Caballer and
Peter Kuszynski beat Herran and Brice Bonin, 6-2.
Western Michigan is back out at Sorensen Courts on Saturday at noon against Omaha. WMU will take a moment prior to the start of the match to celebrate the careers of its seniors Opitz and
Zac Faveri.
