CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced its postseason awards on Wednesday with Western Michigan volleyball senior outside hitter
Rachel Bontrager earning MAC Player of the Year honors. Alongside Bontrager, freshman setter
Logan Case was named MAC co-Setter & Freshman of the Year.
Bontrager and Case also earned First Team All-MAC honors with Case being named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. Joining Bontrager and Case was sophomore
Maggie King who garnered First Team All-MAC honors. Western Michigan led the conference with seven all-conference honors and awards.
Senior outside hitter
Rachel Bontrager becomes the ninth player in school history and first since Zakiya Pope back in 2000 to earn MAC Player of the Year honors. Bontrager was also named First Team All-MAC for the third year in a row after leading the conference and ranking sixth in the NCAA with 344 kills. Bontrager's 4.59 kills per set ranks first in the MAC and 12
th in the nation.
Bontrager ended the regular season having recorded 18 straight matches with double-digit kills and had double-digit kills in 20 of the 21 matches this season. Bontrager's .324 hitting percentage in 21 matches this season was the ninth best mark in the MAC while her nine double-doubles led the Broncos.
For her career Bontrager is the only player in school history to have over 1,600 career kills and 1,000 career digs. With 1,613 career kills Bontrager ranks second all-time in school history while her 1,032 career digs are the tenth most in program history. This season Bontrager registered a career-high 30 kills in a five-set victory over Buffalo on March 4. Bontrager became the first player since 2005 to eclipse 30 kills in a match.
Freshman
Logan Case earned MAC co-Setter of the Year honors, marking the fifth Bronco in program history to do so and the first since Terin Norris back in 2012. Case was also named MAC Freshman of the Year, the 10th Bronco to earn the award and first since 2015.
Case ended the regular season leading the MAC and the NCAA with 12.16 assists per set. Case's 12.16 assists per set is the eighth best mark in a single-season in school history. The freshman setter also led the conference and ranked second nationally with 912 total assists.
The Maineville, Ohio native ranked second on the Broncos this season with six double-doubles and had eight matches this season with at least 50 assists. Case had double-digit assists in every match this season and had over 40 assists in 14 of the 21 matches. Case's 59 assists in a win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 5, was the fifth highest total in the MAC this season.
Sophomore
Maggie King earned First Team All-MAC honors after ranking eighth in the MAC in kills (255) and kills per set (3.64).
King ended the regular season having recorded double digit kills in 11 straight matches and had double-digit kills in 15 of WMU's 21 matches. King's 255 kills ranked 61st in the NCAA with the sophomore outside hitter registering one double-double this season. King also ranked 96th in the nation in total attacks and 83rd in total points.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native had a team-best .550 hitting percentage at Toledo on Jan. 23 while her 52 total attempts at Akron on March 13 was the most in the MAC for a three-set match.
