Volleyball Sweep MAC West Weekly Honors for Second Straight Week

CLEVELAND – For the second consecutive week the Western Michigan Volleyball team swept the Mid-American Conference West Division weekly honors, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Bontrager earned MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors while fellow senior Smith earned MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honors. Rounding out the awards freshman Logan Case was named MAC West Setter of the Week. The trio guided WMU this past weekend to a pair of victories at Akron.

Bontrager in two matches against Akron led the Broncos with 36 kills, averaging 5.14 per set while notching two double-doubles. The Valparaiso, Ind., native has recorded double-digit kills in 12 straight matches and has a team-high six double-doubles.

In a four-set victory over Akron on Friday, Bontrager had 16 kills to go along with a season-high 16 digs. On Saturday the senior outside hitter had 20 kills with 12 digs and a staggering .459 hitting percentage with four blocks. In the three-set victory on Saturday at Akron, Bontrager also became just the third player in school history to eclipse 1,500 career kills.

Within the conference Bontrager ranks first in kills per set (4.61) and total kills (249) while also ranking ahead of the MAC in points per set (5.04) and points (272).

Fellow senior Kaley Smith helped WMU defensively with 40 digs, averaging 5.71 digs per set in the perfect 2-0 week for the Broncos. Smith has recorded double-digit digs in six straight matches and ranks second in the MAC with 510 digs this season.

Against Akron on Friday Smith led the Broncos with 22 digs while matching her career-high with five assists. In the sweep of Akron on Saturday, Smith led the way once again with 18 digs to go along with two service aces and three assists.

For the fourth time this season freshman Logan Case earned MAC West Setter of the Week honors after posting one double-double to go along with 96 assists, averaging 13.71 assists per set. Case also tallied two service aces with 24 digs and three blocks in the 2-0 weekend at Akron.

On Friday at Akron Case earned her third double-double of the season with 50 assists and 15 digs. Case's 50 assists marked the fifth time this season the freshman setter has eclipsed more than 50 assists. The 15 digs for Case also marked a new career-high. In the sweep of Akron on Saturday Case led WMU with 46 assists and had nine digs and three blocks.

Overall Case leads the MAC in assists per set (11.85) and ranks second in the conference in total assists (640).
