KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex, defeating West Virginia 1-0.
Dylan Sing scored the game-winner and his first of the season for the Broncos, while redshirt sophomore
Isaac Walker made four saves, two coming in the final minutes, to earn his second shutout of the season.
"That's a very big result for us," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "It's a six-point swing and is exactly what we needed. If we went in an 0-2 hole in MAC play it would be very difficult to climb out of.
The Mountaineers had possession early on in the game but the Broncos flipped it midway through the first half.
Sing's goal put the Broncos ahead in the 32nd minute.
Landon Fisher tracked down the ball and took off down the right flank. He crossed it to the far post and Sing rose above the WVU defender and headed it down and into the goal.
WVU kept up its attack in the second half, despite going down a man after red card was issued to Denk Gracia after a tackle from behind, but the Bronco back line and Walker held strong.
Walker made three of his four saves in the second half, all in the final eight minutes of play, and all four on the game came from shots within the 18-yard box.
"Isaac was very brave in a couple of key moments," Wiseman added. "We've come to expect that out of him. He is one of our leaders we are relying on more and more as our youngers continue to develop and get more experience."
The victory marked the first home game in 491 days for the Broncos and the first in March.
"Aaron Dykstra and his staff did an amazing job on our field," said Wiseman. "The WMU Soccer Complex looked like it was mid-July out there today."
WMU heads on the road for two straight at Northern Illinois next Wednesday and at Akron on Monday, March 22.
