KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend, hosting Miami on Friday at 1 p.m. and Bowling Green on Sunday at 1 p.m.
WMU heads into MAC play with a perfect 8-0 record during non-conference play but have not played since a 7-0 win over Oakland back on Feb. 28. WMU had a double-header Butler scheduled for last weekend but it was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Bulldog program. The Broncos have defeated opponents with a 7-0 score line in five of the eight matches this season.
SPECTATOR INFORMATION
Friday's match will be outdoors at the Sorensen Courts on WMU's campus. Due to COVID-19 regulations fan attendance is invite only via a pass list. Gates will be open 30 minutes prior to the start.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
The RedHawks enter MAC play at 6-3 and have won five of their last six matches. Miami is 0-3 when on the road this season with losses at Kentucky, Louisville and Xavier.
Laura Rico and Sofia Zaprianov have the top singles records on the team, each at 6-3. Rico is 2-0 at No. 1 and 4-3 at No. 2. Zaprianov has wins at 3, 4, 5 and 6. Brindtha Ramasamy is 5-2 this season at No. 1. MU has switched up its doubles teams quite frequently this year, using nine different combinations, with the duo of Ramasamy and Rico being used five times at No. 1 for a 2-3 record.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Bowling Green heads to Northern Illinois on Friday before traveling to Kalamazoo on Sunday. The Falcons are 4-2 this season and winners in their last three.
UNDEFEATED
In addition to WMU being undefeated, the team has eight players undefeated in singles play. Freshmen
Ana Guadiana and
Karin Hamilton are each 8-0 so far this season. Guadiana is 3-0 at No. 2 and 4-0 and at No. 3 with a lone win coming at No. 4. Hamilton is 3-0 at No. 4 and 4-0 at No. 3, with also a win at No. 2 on the season. Junior Kaitlyn Rogosh and sophomore Lindsey Zeigler are each 7-0. Zieglar is 5-0 at No. 1 and 2-0 at No. 2, while Rogosh is 2-0 at No. 4, 4-0 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6. Freshman
Maya Perkucin is 6-0, while Tylor Smith,
Kristina Tiraspolsky and Paula Wholers are each 1-0.
ON THE ROAD
Western Michigan heads to Eastern Michigan next Friday at 1 p.m. and then travels down to Ball State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
