WMU Set for Three-Game Series at Cincinnati

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team returns to action this weekend for its final non-conference road series of the season against Cincinnati, March 12-14.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan returns to the baseball diamond with an overall record of 0-3. Back on Feb. 26-28, the Broncos were swept by Kansas State in a competitive three-game series with two of the three games being decided by one run.

WMU Against the American Athletic Conference
WMU has played 44 games against opponents from the American Athletic Conference with the Broncos registering an overall record of 15-29.

Charp! Charp!
Junior Connor Charping leads the Broncos with a .417 batting average and a .462 on-base percentage. Against Kansas State, Charping scored two runs on five hits with one double and one triple.

Just Get on Base
Senior Drew Devine and junior Justin McIntyre each have double-digit reached base streaks heading into the weekend. Devine has reached base safely in 14 straight games while McIntyre has done so in 13 straight.

Racking Up the K's
The starting rotation last weekend at Kansas State of Easton Sikorski, Brady Miller and Jack Huisman combined to registered 15 of WMU's 26 strikeouts in the three-game series. Sikorski and Miller are tied for the team-lead with six strikeouts each.

Road to 2,000
Western Michigan is just two wins away from clinching 2,000 wins as a program. With two wins the Broncos can become just the second team in Mid-American Conference history to reach 2,000 wins.

Scouting Cincinnati
Cincinnati heads into the weekend with an overall record of 3-7 and split its four-game series last weekend at UNC Wilmington. The Bearcats were a participant in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and prior to the season being canceled last season had a 7-8 record including a perfect 7-0 record at home. Cincinnati was picked to finish sixth in the preseason AAC coaches' poll.

The Bearcats are led offensively by Joey Bellini who in 10 games this season has a .318 batting average with five runs scored, two doubles and seven RBIs. As a team Cincinnati is hitting .244 and has scored 58 runs on 88 hits with 12 home runs.

On the mound the Bearcats are led by LHP and reigning AAC Weekly Honor Roll Member Garret Schoenle. Schoenle is 1-0 on the season, pitching 13.1 innings in three starts, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits and striking out 24.

What's Next?
Following its weekend series with the Bearcats the Broncos open up Mid-American Conference play on the road, March 19-21 at Ball State. WMU then returns home for its home opener March 26-28 against in-state foe Eastern Michigan.
