SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore midfielder
Max Keenan fired a penalty kick into the back of the net just 3:42 into overtime to give the Western Michigan men's soccer team a 2-1 road win over Spring Arbor on Wednesday afternoon.
The Broncos (2-1-0) played the ball into the 18-yard box. Sophomore forward
Charlie Sharp tried to shoot but the ball deflected off of a SAU defender's arm and the referee called a hand ball. Keenan stepped up to the penalty spot and placed a hard shot center-left of the goal and past the keeper for his first goal of the season.
WMU dominated possession and the chances on the day, outshooting the NAIA 11th-ranked team 24-2 overall and 11-2 on goal. However, it was the Cougars that struck first in the 71st minute on a goal by Steven Guipe. Aiden Messinger played a low cross into the box and Guipe's shot deflected off of a Bronco defender and into the net.
Just 42 second later
Pepe Martinez-Bertrand tied it up at 1-1. Martinez-Bertrand picked up a loose ball just outside the top-right corner of the SAU 18-yard box. The senior midfielder then dribbled through traffic laterally, going toward the center edge of the box and then fired it off the post and into the net for his first goal of the season.
Western Michigan returns to action on Sunday, hosting West Virginia at the WMU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live at
