KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Three players in double figures and a double-double for sophomore
Titus Wright wasn't enough as the Western Michigan men's basketball team fell to Miami, 74-66 on Wednesday afternoon inside University Arena.
For the ninth time this season the Broncos had three players score in double figures as sophomore B. Artis White led the way with 20 points, matching his career-high. It's the third game this season White has scored 20 points to go along with his 15
th double-digit scoring game.
White was 7-of-15 from the field against Miami while knocking down a career-high six three-pointers. The sophomore guard also had seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in 30 minutes.
Following White was senior forward
Greg Lee with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Lee scored in double figures for the 11
th time this season while also registering three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring was sophomore
Titus Wright who recorded his third double-double of the season and first since Dec. 12 against Detroit Mercy. Wright had 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field to go along with 10 rebounds, three of which came on the offensive glass.
It was Wright's third 10-rebound game of the season and fifth of his career. The trio of White, Wright and Lee combined to score 48 of WMU's 66 points on Wednesday afternoon. Junior
Adrian Martin ranked fourth on the team with seven points followed by senior
Rafael Cruz Jr. with four, junior
Patrick Emilien with three and
Danny Kolp and
Jason Whitens with two.
As a team the Broncos shot a stellar 47.3 percent from the field and was 8-of-23 from long distance. Miami was dominant on the glass, outrebounding WMU 41-31 with 16 offensive rebounds to WMU's six.
Western Michigan scored 26 of its 66 points in the paint and forced Miami to commit 10 turnovers, scoring 13 points off those turnovers. WMU also had 17 assists on 26 made field goals.
With the loss WMU now has an overall record of 4-14 and 3-10 in Mid-American Conference play. It will be a quick turnaround for the Broncos who travel to MAC leading Toledo on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. inside Savage Arena.
It was a slow start for both teams to begin the game as Miami made just one of its first seven field goals while WMU was held scoreless for the first 3:30 of action. After the slow start the Bronco offense got going making three straight baskets to take a 9-5 lead at the 14:46 mark of the first half.
Western Michigan ended up making eight of their next 10 field goals to gain a 20-11 lead at the midway point of the first half. WMU extended its lead later in the first half after
Jason Whitens stole the ball and took it the length of the court for the fast break lay-up.
WMU held a 33-22 lead with five minutes remaining before the RedHawks embarked on an 18-2 run to gain its first lead of the game at 40-35. To end the half Miami made three straight field goals while
Greg Lee converted an and-one to trim the RedHawks lead down to 40-39 at halftime.
At the beginning of the second half senior forward
Greg Lee provided an offensive spark scoring four straight points to give WMU a 43-40 lead. A three-pointer by
Patrick Emilien gave WMU a 51-46 lead that held for over three minutes as Miami missed its next four field goals.
During the midway point of the second half neither team was able to get a basket as Miami missed 12 straight field goals while the Broncos went scoreless from the field for over four minutes. Despite the scoreless stretch the Brown & Gold held a 51-48 lead with eight minutes remaining.
With five minutes remaining it was a back and forth duel between WMU and Miami as the Broncos made three straight field goals while Miami made four straight. The RedHawks then embarked on a 7-0 run as WMU went scoreless from the field for nearly three minutes to earn a 65-59 lead with 2:55 left.
Western Michigan cut the lead down to four with under a minute remaining thanks to four straight points from
Greg Lee. However, that was as close as the Broncos got as Miami used another 7-0 run in the final 1:30 to clinch a 74-66 victory.
