OLEAN, N.Y. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season after sweeping a road double-header at St. Bonaventure 7-0, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Three of WMU's five wins this season have now come on the road after a win at Valparaiso last Saturday.
"Today was another step forward for this team," said head coach
Ryan Tomlinson. "We played our best match to date in the morning match and that carried through to the second. We possibly have five matches in 10 days, so we need to rest up and also get to work on some things."
MATCH 1 – 7-0
The Broncos won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Femke Tjon-A-Joe and
Kristina Tiraspolsky defeated Andrea Roque and Anastasia Gubanova 7-5 at No. 1. The freshmen duo of
Ana Guadiana and
Karin Hamilton took down Sofia Franco and Paula Velilla 6-3 and the team of sophomore
Lindsey Zieglar and junior Kaitlyn Rogosh defeated Emily Stanley and Buse Gunay 6-3.
In singles play Tjon-A-Joe had a tight match at No. 1 with Gubanova, winning 6-2, 4-6, 11-9. Ziegler defeated Franco at No. 2 6-1, 6-1, while Guadiana had the same score line in her win over Roque at No. 3. Hamilton was slotted at No. 4 singles and beat Stanley 6-2, 6-1, while Rogosh won at No. 5 6-4, 6-0. Freshman
Maya Perkucin picked up a win at No. 6 over Velilla 6-3, 6-1 to wrap up the match.
MATCH 2 – 4-0
Tjon-A-Joe and Tiraspolsky defeated Roque and Franco 6-2 at No. 1, while Ziegler and Rogosh won over Gunay and Velilla 6-0 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play only three matches were completed for the Broncos to pick up the win. Ziegler played at No. 1, beating Gubanova 7-5, 5-2. Guadiana moved up to No. 2 and defeated Franco 6-1, 6-3, while Hamilton defeated Roque at No. 3 6-1, 6-2. The rest of the matches did not finish.
Western Michigan is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Wayne State at 1 p.m. The Broncos are home again on Saturday against Kansas City with the start time still to be determined.
