OXFORD, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team won its fifth straight game, including third consecutive on the road, after a 6-3 win at Miami on Friday night.
Six different Broncos lit the lap in the win, while sophomore forward Ty Glover had a career-high three points with a goal and two assists. WMU (11-4-0, 4-3-0 NCHC) also picked up goals from Jason Polin, Michael Joyaux, Chad Hillebrand and Paul Washe. Ronnie Attard and Cole Gallant each had a pair of assists, while Brandon Bussi made 28 saves.
After getting outshot 16-12 in the first period, WMU went on to outshoot MU 45-31 in the game. The Broncos finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while holding the RedHawks scoreless on five.
Polin gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at 5:18 in the first period on his sixth goal of the season. Polin got the puck from Aidan Fulp behind the Miami net and skated into the right circle, passing it off to Attard. Attard returned the puck to him and he fired a shot just under the cross bar and into the net from the right circle. Attard picked up his 12th assist of the season on the goal and Fulp tallied his third.
The RedHawks responded just 14 seconds later on the first of two goals by Chase Pletzke, tying it up at 1-1.
The Broncos responded 1:13 later on Hillebrand's first goal of the season. Dylan Wendt won a loose puck and flipped it out of the Bronco zone to Hillebrand and he maneuvered around a pair of MU defenseman for a breakaway goal, retaking the lead. Wendt earned his first collegiate assist on the goal.
Pletzke netted his second of the night after PJ Fletcher created a turnover in the WMU zone and Pletzke scored from the deep slot to tie it back up, 2-2.
Joyaux gave the Broncos the lead for good at 16:03 in the first on a power play goal. Joyaux got the puck from Washe and fired a shot from the deep slot that deflected off of two Miami players and into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Glover picked up his sixth assist on the season and Bussi tallied his first of the year.
Washe extended his goal-scoring streak to four games at 9:26 in the second period. Glover got the puck in the neutral zone from Hillebrand and skated into the Miami zone. He maneuvered his way through traffic and was able to pull Miami goalie Logan Neaton out of position, passing it across the crease for Washe to punch it into an empty net, making it 4-2.
Fletcher was able to cut the lead back down to one when he put in his own rebound at 13:56.
Brickey netted his first of the year just 1:03 later to push the lead back to two on a seeing-eye wrist shot through traffic from the right point. Gallant and Daniel Hilsendager each picked up assists on the goal.
WMU held a 5-3 lead into the third period and held the RedHawks to just eight shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. MU pulled Neaton from the net for the extra attacker late in the game but Glover got the puck from Gallant and put it in an empty net for his third goal of the season with just 1:44 left to play. Gallant picked up his ninth assist of the season on the goal and Attard tallied his 13th.
