OXFORD, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team erased an early two-goal deficit to sweep the Miami RedHawks after a 5-3 win at Steve Cady Arena on Saturday night.
The win was WMU's sixth in a row, improving the record to 12-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play.
Five different Broncos scored on the night, while Ty Glover led the way with a goal and an assist. Cole Gallant, Tim Washe, Ronnie Attard and Luke Grainger also lit the lamp. Western Michigan outshot Miami 42-21 overall, including 35-14 in the second and third periods.
WMU was in a quick hole after Hampus Rydqvist scored just 37 seconds into the game with a shot from the right circle that was well screened and got past Brandon Bussi.
Matthew Barbolini redirected a shot by Derek Daschke into the net at 6:10 on the power play to put the RedHawks up 2-0.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard at 16:23 with a power play goal of their own to cut the lead to 2-1. Glover had a shot from the right circle and Gallant was there to punch in the rebound for his sixth goal of the season. Glover picked up his eighth assist of the season, while Drew Worrad tallied his team-leading 21st.
WMU went into the second period down a goal but Washe netted his first of the season at 8:36 to tie the game up at 2-2. Jamie Rome had the puck just beyond the MU blue line and hit a streaking Washe down the middle. The sophomore forward got in alone on Ludvig Persson and beat him high on the breakaway. Rome picked up his first of the season on the goal and Daniel Hilsendager tallied his third of the season and second of the weekend.
Tied up at 2-2 in the third period the Broncos earned a power play early and Attard punched it in from the bottom edge of the left circle for his fifth goal of the season. Josh Passolt won the puck on the left boards and got it to Paul Washe in the slot, he then sent it Attard at the back door. Washe tallied his eighth assist of the season, with Washe recording his fifth of the year and extending his point streak to five games.
Ryan Savage tied up the game with a goal at 10:45 in the third period, taking advantage of a WMU turnover in the neutral zone and beating Bussi at the near post.
Just 1:16 later Grainger netted the game-winner from the right circle. Cedric Fielder took the puck in the neutral zone and sent it up to Max Sasson, who found Grainger at the blue line. The sophomore forward skated into the right circle and beat Persson over his shoulder. Sasson recorded his first collegiate assist on the goal, with Fielder picking up his sixth.
Glover added an empty-net goal with 2:01 to play to finish off the game.
