OXFORD, Ohio – Maggie King collected her third double-double of the season (17 kills, 15 digs) to help the Western Michigan volleyball team record a 3-1 win (27-29, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21) and extend its winning streak to seven in a row on Friday night in Oxford, Ohio. The win moves the Broncos to 6-0 in the Mid-American Conference, their best start to conference play since 2009.
King led the three Broncos who recorded double-digit kills with 17.
Meredith Phillips tallied 14 kills, while
Kennedy Hogan added a career-high 10 for Western Michigan (13-4, 6-0).
Andelyn Simkins came just shy of her fourth straight double-double, as she picked up nine kills and 11 digs for the evening.
Logan Case dished out a match-high 53 assists, her sixth match with 50 or more assists this season.
Mairead Boyle notched a team-high 16 digs for Western Michigan, while
Maddie Arundel pitched in 13 digs.
WMU got off to the early lead in the first set, as a 5-1 run put the Broncos in front, 10-5. Four in a row by Miami (2-13, 0-5) drew the hosts within one, 12-11, then the RedHawks broke a 15-15 tie with five straight to take a 20-15 edge. Miami got its advantage up to 23-17, but a 7-0 surge briefly put the Broncos back in front, 24-23. The RedHawks fought off set point three times, and eventually outlasted WMU in the opening frame, 29-27.
The Broncos rattled off four of the first five in the second set to grab a 4-1 edge. Another 4-1 spurt helped Western Michigan extend the margin out to 14-8. A pair of 3-0 runs helped WMU build the lead to 21-11, and Miami got no closer than nine the rest of the way, as the Broncos evened the match at one set apiece.
With the third frame even at 7-7, WMU used an 8-1 surge to create a 15-8 cushion. A 4-1 Miami run whittled the Broncos' edge to 19-13, but again Western Michigan kept the RedHawks at arm's length for the remainder of the set.
Leading 8-7 in the fourth, Western Michigan ripped off seven of the next nine points to extend its edge to 15-9. The RedHawks closed to within three, 17-14, with a 3-0 run, but could not get any closer, as the Broncos hung on to secure their seventh straight win.
Western Michigan continues its road trip on Saturday evening against Bowling Green in a battle of the last two undefeated teams in MAC play. First serve between the Broncos and Falcons is set for 5 pm, and the match will be streamed live on
