STATESBORO, Ga. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up its first road win and first Mid-American Conference victory of the season after a 3-0 win at Georgia Southern on Saturday night.
All three goals scored by the Broncos came in the second half, with Mike Melaragni, Eric Conerty and Charlie Sharp all putting the ball in the back of the net. WMU outshot GSU 10-6 overall with a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half Brennan Creek went deep into the left-side of the Eagles' box and sent a low cross into the middle. Melaragni swooped in and redirected the ball with his left foot into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The eventual game-winner came in the 54th minute.
Conerty pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute on an absolute laser from approximately 30-yards out. Conerty had the ball with no one around him and just fired it into the bottom-right corner of the net and passed a stunned GSU goalkeeper.
Sharp made it 3-0 minutes later in the 69th minute. Sharp had the ball in WMU's own end and dribbled it all the way down into the Georgia Southern box. He stopped and switched the ball to his left foot and buried it into the bottom-right corner of the near post.
Junior goalkeeper Isaac Walker was only called upon to make two saves on the night to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
Western Michigan takes a break from MAC play for the final time, hosting Detroit Mercy in its last non-conference match of the season on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
