KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team picked up its second straight win and second straight shutout, blanking Detroit Mercy, 1-0, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Caden Jackman recorded the games' lone goal while WMU (6-6-4) goalkeeper Isaac Walker needed to make just one save in the win as the Broncos outshot the Titans 6-3 overall, limiting UDM to just one shot in the first and two in the second.
"It was a solid team win," said head coach Chad Wiseman. "We were very disciplined in our defensive effort. We really limited their ability to earn restarts, which is always an area of concern when playing a Detroit Team. "
The Broncos took the early lade on a penalty kick by Jackman. A shot by Mike Melaragni was headed into the net before a handball on UDM's Ryan Halloran deflected it off the line. Halloran was given a yellow card for the offense and Jackman stepped up and slotted the ball right into the center of the net as goalkeeper Kyle Toutanji dove to the left to score his first goal of the season.
Western Michigan took the 1-0 lead into the second half and endured some early pressure by the Titans but soon wrestled control of the game to dominate possession in the second half.
The Broncos head on the road to take on No. 14 Bowling Green on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be carried live on BGSU's YouTube Channel.
