Third-Quarter Surge Sinks WMU at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Western Michigan University held a 15-13 halftime advantage, but Toledo scored 21 points in the third quarter to overtake the Broncos on their way to a 34-15 victory over WMU on Saturday at the Glass Bowl.

Kaleb Eleby hit 15-of-29 passes for 232 yards and added a rushing touchdown for the Broncos (5-3, 2-2). Skyy Moore paced the WMU receiving corps with eight catches for 128 yards for his fifth 100+ yard performance of the season. Jaylen Hall added five grabs for 88 yards. Ryan Selig led the Western Michigan defense with 11 tackles.

Toledo (4-4, 2-2) got on the board first, converting good field position into a short field goal just over four minutes into the contest. On the first play of the second quarter, another short kick made it 6-0 Rockets.

Western Michigan answered UT's second field goal with its first points of the afternoon, as Nick Mihalic connected on a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit in half, 6-3. The Rockets responded with a quick scoring drive, taking just three plays to score the contest's first touchdown and stretch their lead to 13-3.

The Broncos answered with their first touchdown, as Eleby kept the ball on an option play and raced into the end zone from 14 yards out to trim the margin to 13-9. After forcing a three-and-out on defense, WMU got the ball back and struck quickly. Eleby found Moore deep down the right sideline for 39 yards, and Sean Tyler scored from four yards out on the next play to put the Broncos up, 15-13. A Toledo field goal attempt as the first half ended came up short, and WMU took that two-point margin into the halftime locker room.

Toledo regained the lead on its first possession of the second half, scoring a touchdown on fourth-and-14 to move back ahead, 20-15, with 8:08 to go in the third quarter. On Western Michigan's next possession, the Rockets forced a fumble and took it back for a touchdown to push their advantage to 27-15. Toledo tacked on one more score in the final minute of the third quarter.
