OXFORD, Ohio. -- The Western Michigan hockey team erased a two-goal lead in the third period to battle Miami to a 3-3 tie and earn the extra point after 2-0 win in the shootout on the road on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Miami's Monte Graham netted his second goal of the season, punching in a rebound on a shot by Chase Pletzke at 16:03 in the second period.
MU held its 1-0 lead into the third period and pushed it to 2-0 on a goal by Ryan Savage just 37 seconds in.
Western Michigan responded on the power play, with freshman forward
Ty Glover picking up his second goal of the weekend at 7:59.
Michael Joyaux played it down to Glover just in front of the right edge of the crease. Glover spun with the puck and put it between Miami goalie Ludvig Persson's legs and into the net for his second career goal Joyaux picked up his third assist on the season and
Drew Worrad tallied his team-leading 11th.
The RedHawks pushed their lead back to two on a goal by Alex Capstick at 9:48 but the Broncos responded just 13 seconds later. After winning the draw, WMU pushed the puck into the Miami zone. Miami tried to clear it but Glover was able to get it to
Brett Van Os and Van Os found
Jamie Rome at the top of the left circle. Rome skated into the slot and fired one past Persson for his first collegiate goal. Van Os picked up his second assist of the weekend, as did Glover.
The Broncos tied it up just over two minutes later at 12:31 on a goal by
Ronnie Attard.
Jason Polin broke up the play in the MU zone and got the puck to Van Os, who found Attard coming into the zone. Attard ripped a shot from distance and it got past Persson for his second goal of the weekend and third on the season.
WMU outshot Miami 34-28, including 5-2 in the 3-on-3 overtime but the game headed to a best of three shootout.
Josh Passolt and
Ethen Frank both tallied for the Broncos in the first two rounds. Savage missed wide on his attempt and the second attempt was stopped by
Alex Aslanidis to earn the extra point.
Aslanidis finished with career-high 25 saves, with 14 of them coming in the second period. The Broncos finished 1-for-2 on the power play and held Miami scoreless on three.
The Broncos get ready to host St. Cloud State next Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
