Hockey Rolls Past No. 4/5 St. Cloud State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team exploded for three goals in the third period to down No. 4/5 St. Cloud State, 6-2, on Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

Six different Broncos lit the lamp in the victory with Ronnie Attard, Tim Washe, Scooter Brickey, Josh Passolt, Ethen Frank and Paul Washe all finding the back of the net. Attard, Passolt and Paul Washe each had an assist for two-point nights. Freshman goalie Alex Alsanidis made 21 saves on the night to extend his unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1). Despite being outshot 12-7 in the first period, WMU (4-8-3, 4-8-3-0-0-1 NCHC) ended up topping the Huskies 25-23 on the night, including an 8-3 edge in the final 20 minutes.

WMU struck first on its first shot of the game coming at 6:26 in the first period. Paul Washe won the puck in the WMU zone and skated down for a two-on-one rush. He spun in the left circle and passed it to Attard, who put it past David Hrenak before crashing into the net. The goal was Attard's fourth of the season and extended his goal-scoring streak to three games. Washe picked up his sixth assist of the season on the goal.

SCSU tied it up at 1-1 at 6:48 in the second period. Spencer Meier had a shot from the top of the right circle blocked by a Bronco. The puck dropped to the skates of Sam Hentges, who put it into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Western Michigan responded on Tim Washe's first collegiate goal at 13:37 in the second. Cedric Fiedler broke up play in the SCSU zone and flipped it down the ice to fellow freshman Chad Hillebrand. Hillebrand secured the puck and found Washe streaking through the slot. Washe then skate in alone and put the puck into the top-left corner of the net to retake the lead. Hillebrand and Fiedler both recorded their first collegiate assists on the goal, with Fiedler also tallying his first career point.

WMU extended the lead to 3-1 on Brickey's second goal of the season. Kale Bennet passed the puck to the sophomore defenseman at the right point. Freshman forward Ty Glover was parked in front of Hrenak to provide the screen and Brickey's shot got through traffic and found the back of the net. Bennett picked up his first assist of the season on the eventual game-winning goal, while Cole Gallant notched his eighth.

St. Cloud State cut the lead to 3-2 early in the third period at 4:18. A Bronco defenseman turned the puck over in front of the WMU bench, creating a two-on-one rush for Hentges and Kevin Fitzgerald. Hentges passed the puck to Fitzgerald for the one-timer in the deep slot.

Passolt responded for the Broncos at 7:40 for his fifth goal of the season. Attard took the puck away from a SCSU forward in the WMU zone and immediately sent the puck up ice to Passolt, who had a 2-on-1 rush. Passolt elected to shoot and ripped one past Hrenak and into the net. The assist was Attard's eighth on the season and marked his second multipoint night in the past three games.

A penalty was called on the Huskies during Passolt's goal and the Broncos immediately took advantage to push the lead to 5-2. WMU set up its cycle and Drew Worrad found Frank in the left circle. The senior forward corralled the puck and fired it into the net for his team-best eighth goal of the season. Worrad picked up his team-leading 12th assist of the season on the power play goal and Michael Joyaux tallied his fourth.

Minutes later Paul Washe made it 6-2. Passolt won a battle on the boards and chipped it out to Luke Grainger for a two-on-one rush. Grainger placed a saucer pass right on Washe's stick, who back-handed it into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

WMU finished 1-for-1 on the power play, while holding SCSU scoreless on its only one.

The two teams are back at it again on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.
