KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Miami on Sunday afternoon at Lawson Ice Arena. Luke Grainger was the goal scorer in the effort for the Broncos.
Grainger was assisted by fellow Broncos (2-8-2, 2-8-2-0-0-0 NCHC) Josh Passolt and Ronnie Attard. Miami (4-7-1, 4-7-1-0-1-0 NCHC) saw two goals from Joe Cassetti, while Ben Lown, John Sladic and Robby Drazner added scores. Phil Knies and Matt Barry logged two assists each for the RedHawks.
In goal, Ludvig Persson turned away 32 WMU shots on the night. Austin Cain made nine saves for the Broncos, while Alex Aslanidis made eight saves in relief.
Miami went 2-for-3 on the power play, with both goals coming less than two minutes apart in the second period. WMU was 0-for-4 with a man-advantage.
Just as they did on Saturday, the Broncos struck first when Grainger scored his third of the year from Josh Passolt and Ronnie Attard just past the midway point of the opening period. Attard won the puck in the neutral zone, then Passolt took a pass at the blue line and carried it in the zone before finding Grainger in front of the net.
The visitors responded to tie the game less than two minutes later when Lown sent home a rebound after initial attempts by Phil Knies and Matt Barry.
Miami used a four-minute burst in the second period to open up a 4-1 lead. First came a power-play goal from Joe Cassetti to put the RedHawks ahead. He followed just 2:11 later with another man-up score to make it 3-1. John Sladic added on just 1:25 later to make it 4-1. The Broncos did three power-play chances in the middle period but failed to capitalize.
The RedHawks added a final goal at 6:14 of the third period when Robby Drazner connected for his second of the season.
Next weekend sees the Broncos and RedHawks renew acquaintances, as WMU will travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a two-game series Friday & Saturday, Jan. 8-9. Faceoff is at 7 p.m. on Friday, with a 5 p.m. start slated for Saturday.
