CLEVELAND – On Monday the Mid-American Conference announced its volleyball weekly awards with Western Michigan volleyball senior outside hitter Rachel Bontrager and senior libero/defensive specialist Kaley Smith earning weekly honors.

Bontrager was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week while Smith was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. Both players helped Western Michigan go a perfect 2-0 on the weekend at Toledo.

Bontrager led the Broncos over the weekend with 36 kills, averaging 4.50 per set. Bontrager also recorded a .333 attack percentage, second best on WMU. In the season opener the Valparaiso, Ind., native guided WMU to a five-set victory with a double-double, earning a team-high 16 kills and 10 digs.

On Saturday Bontrager followed up her double-double with 20 kills and a staggering .471 attack percentage. The senior outside hitter ranks second in the MAC in total kills and sixth in kills per set. Bontrager leads the conference with a total of 39.5 points.

Smith led the Broncos over the weekend with 49 digs, averaging 6.12 digs per set. On Friday against Toledo Smith led the Brown & Gold with 32 digs, three shy of her career-high. Smith also had three assist and matched her career-high with three service aces in the five-set victory over the Rockets.

On Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of Toledo, the Mendon, Mich., native had 17 digs to go along with a career-high five assists. Smith leads the MAC in both total digs and digs per set. Smith also ranks eighth in the MAC in service aces per set.
