DULUTH, Min. -- The Western Michigan hockey team suffered a sweep by No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth after falling to the Bulldogs, 4-1, at AMSOIL Arena on Sunday evening.
The Broncos (5-10-3, 5-10-3-0-0-1 NCHC)surrendered three goals in the first period and were unable to dig out of the hole.
Cole Koepke netted the game's first goal at 7:31 in the first period. Ben Alquist scored just 1:07 later to push the lead to 2-0. Connor Kelley capped off the period with a goal at 17:48. The goals by Almquist and Kelley were each the first of their careers.
Western Michigan cut into the lead with a power play goal by Ty Glover at 2:22 in the second period. Drew Worrad got the puck down low to Glover. The big freshman forward fired a shot on net and then put in his own rebound over the shoulder of UMD goalie Zach Stejskal for his third goal of the season. Worrad picked up his team-leading 14th assist on the goal and junior defenseman Michael Joyaux notched his sixth this season.
UMD responded just 1:07 later at 3:29 to push the lead back to three, 4-1, on a power play goal by Noah Cates.
WMU pulled backup goalie Austin Cain, who came on in relief to start the second period, with 4:02 left to play to give the Broncos an advantage but WMU was unable to break through.
The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 25-20 on the night and finished 1-for-4 on the power play.
Western Michigan takes next weekend off before heading back to the state of Minnesota to take on NCHC leaders St. Cloud State on Feb. 5-6.Â
