Hockey's Unbeaten Streak Snapped at UMD

DULUTH, Min. – The Western Michigan hockey team had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 5-1 loss at No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth at AMSOIL Arena on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in the span of 1:17 in the first period. The first came on the power play by Nick Swaney at 15:15: Kobe Rother scored at 16:32 to push the lead to 2-0.

Neither team scored in the second period but the Broncos cut the lead to 2-1 early in the third period. Cedric Fiedler pushed the puck up to Ethen Frank and Frank rushed down the right side of the ice. The NCHC's leading goal-scorer cut in and fired a shot on net. Ryan Fanti made the initial save with his right pad but Drew Worrad secured the rebound and back-handed it into the net for his third goal of the season. Frank picked up his fourth assist and Fiedler his second.

Minnesota-Duluth responded minutes later on the first of three straight goals by Jackson Cates. The first came on the power play at 5:48 on an open shot from the slot. The second came at 11:22 from a similar position just second after a UMD power play ended. Cates finished off the natural hat trick at 13:46 on a two-on-one rush.

The Broncos were outshot 37-18 on the night and held scoreless on three power plays. UMD finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

The two teams battle again on Sunday evening at 5:07 p.m.
