KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A program-best six student-athletes from the 2019-20 Western Michigan hockey team have been named American Hockey Coaches Association "Krampede All-American Scholars."
WMU's redshirt junior defenseman Kale Bennett (3.99), freshman goalie Brandon Bussi (3.89), junior forward Brett Van Os (3.88), sophomore defenseman Jared Kucharek (3.86), freshman forward Jason Polin (3.79) and sophomore forward Drew Worrad (3.78) all earned the honors. Due to the effects of Covid-19 on actual grades in the spring, the AHCA adopted revised criteria for this year's honorees. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA for the fall semester and participated in 40% of their school's games.
Bennett and Kucharek repeat as All-American Scholars from last season, while Bussi, Van Os, Polin and Worrad are all first-time honorees.
Bennett played in 33 games on the season, registering a career-high eight points on three goals and five assists. Bussi started in 34 games, posting an 18-12-4 record with a 2.65 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. Van Os played in a career-high 22 games and also posted a career-best eight points on three goals and five assists. Kucharek played in 32 games, posting five points on one goal and five assists while finishing with a +5 plus/minus. Polin capped off his first season playing in 31 games, scoring seven goals and adding two assists for nine points. Worrad capped off his second college season with a career-high 17 points on six goals and 11 assists in 31 games, while finishing with a +11 plus/minus.
The six are a program-best since the AHCA started the honors three seasons ago.
