LEXINGTON, Ky. – The United States Marines Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Monday that the Western Michigan volleyball team earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for academic excellence.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
WMU registered a 3.57 cumulative team GPA during the 2019-20 academic year and was one of 227 NCAA Division I schools to earn the academic honor.
It's the first time since the 2013-14 season the Broncos have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award and the seventh time in program history. Under head coach
Colleen Munson, the Broncos have earned the Academic honor six times.
Overall 1,313 teams earned the Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 season, topping last year's record by almost 200 teams. In all three NCAA Women's Divisions, over 50 percent of the membership won the award, led by 68% in Division I.
