Baseball Continues Academic Success

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Despite the 2020 baseball season being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Western Michigan baseball team continued to excel in the classroom posting a program record 3.71 grade point average during the spring semester.

During the spring 2020 semester the Broncos finished with a 3.71 GPA with 10 student-athletes earning a 4.0. Of the 31 student-athletes on the 2020 WMU baseball roster, 24 registered over a 3.5 GPA with no player recording a GPA lower than 3.2.

It is the 19th semester in a row that Western Michigan baseball has earned a team GPA over 3.0 and the fifth time under head coach Billy Gernon the Broncos have surpassed the program record. In 19 years of coaching Gernon has only had two semesters of his team posting below a 3.0 GPA and only once has it happened at Western Michigan.

"I am so proud of our team for finishing strong academically," said Gernon. "It speaks to their tremendous character as individuals as well as our team culture."

Below is the last two years of Bronco baseball's team GPA:
Spring 2020: 3.71
Fall 2019: 3.55
Spring 2019: 3.3
Fall 2018: 3.40
