Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader at Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Western Michigan baseball team split its doubleheader at the Snowbird Classic on Friday, defeating Army in comeback fashion 8-6 followed by a 10-0 defeat to Iowa in Port Charlotte, Fla.

In the doubleheader the Broncos were led by the duo of junior Blake Dunn and redshirt junior Logan Hudson, who each recorded at .400 batting average. Dunn led the team with two RBIs while freshman Greg Budig and junior Justin McIntyre led the day with two runs scored each.

On the mound, the Broncos totaled nine strikeouts led by senior RHP Zach Mehelich with five. As a team, WMU registered a .218 batting average and had a .323 on-base percentage. It was a stellar day for the Brown & Gold in the field, committing no errors.

Western Michigan has now won three of its last four games and has an overall record of 8-6. The Broncos conclude play at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. on Saturday against St. Bonaventure. First pitch against the Bonnies is set for 11:00 a.m.

Game One (WMU – 8, Army – 6)
Western Michigan secured a comeback victory by scoring five runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Army 8-6 in its first game of Friday's doubleheader. With the win the Broncos moved to 3-0 at the Snowbird Classic.

The Broncos trailed 6-3 heading into the final inning and scored all five of its runs with two outs. WMU posted runners on first and second with two outs after freshman Greg Budig laced a single back up the middle followed by junior Justin McIntyre reaching base on an error.

Senior Ethan Hajdukovic delivered the first run of the ninth inning for the Broncos on an RBI single back up the middle to score Budig from second. In the next at-bat, junior Blake Dunn rocketed a ball off the Army pitcher, allowing McIntyre to score and cut WMU deficit down to 6-5.

Redshirt junior Logan Hudson was hit by a pitch to load the bases prior to back-to-back wild pitches allowing WMU to regain the lead at 7-6. The Broncos added one more run off the bat of junior Sean O'Keefe for an 8-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth Army posted runners on the corners with two outs before redshirt senior Will Mullen recorded a swinging strikeout to seal the 8-6 victory.

The Broncos scored eight runs on nine hits against the Black Knights with the duo of Dunn and Budig each earning multi-hit games. Dunn also registered a multi-RBI game going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and two RBIs. The quartet of McIntyre, Hajdukovic, O'Keefe and Budig all had one RBI in the victory.

Earning the start, sophomore RHP Brady Miller dazzled by throwing seven innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Of Miller's 115 pitches against Army, 64 were for strikes. Registering his first win of the season in relief was Mullen, who went two innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while recording two strikeouts.

The Broncos got on the board in the top of the first as McIntyre led off the game with a double to right center field. McIntyre then stole third on a strikeout to give the Broncos a runner in scoring position with one out. On a 1-2 count, Dunn popped a sacrifice fly to left field allowing McIntyre to score and give WMU a 1-0 lead.

WMU held its lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Army struck for one run on an RBI single to left field. The Black Knights gained their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run on one hit to grab a 2-1 advantage. Army added two more on the board in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-1 lead after six innings of play.

Western Michigan battled back in the top of the seventh by scoring two runs on two hits to cut into its deficit. Junior Ryan Missal with one out reached base on an infield single before Budig rocketed an RBI double down the right field line to score Missal from first. A passed ball advanced Budig to third prior to McIntyre reaching on a fielder's choice and cutting the Army lead down to 4-3 after seven.

The Black Knights added to their lead in the bottom of the eight with two runs on two hits before the Broncos offense came to life with five runs on four hits in the top of the ninth to secure the 8-6 victory.

Game Two (WMU – 0, Iowa – 10)
In its second game of the day the Broncos fell to Big Ten Conference foe Iowa, 10-0 to split its doubleheader at the Snowbird Classic.

The Broncos registered three hits against the Hawkeyes, who have won four straight and have an overall record of 7-4 with wins over No.18 Arizona, No.20 North Carolina and No.14 Duke.

Justin McIntyre, Logan Hudson and Sean O'Keefe registered the three hits for the Broncos with McIntyre and O'Keefe each going 1-for-3 at the plate. Hudson was 1-for-2 on the day while also drawing a walk.

In his first start of the season, senior RHP Zach Mehelich was stellar for the Broncos, throwing five innings and registering five strikeouts. Mehelich held the Hawkeyes hitless through the first three innings.

WMU looked to strike in the in the first inning as McIntyre led the game off with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, McIntyre was stranded at second after back to back strikeouts ended the inning.

The Broncos got a runner on base in all but one inning in game two of its doubleheader and left three runners on base. Iowa got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and earned five more in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 10-0 victory.
