Broncos Fall to Mavericks, 10-2

OMAHA, Neb. – The 17th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team fell to Omaha, 10-2, in its second game of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Pod at Baxter Arena on Thursday night.

The Broncos (0-2-0, 0-2-0-0 NCHC) picked up goals from Cole Gallant and Ethen Frank on the night but big second and third periods by the Mavericks doomed the Broncos.

Gallant tied the game up at 1-1 at 12:16 in the first period with a snipe-shot from the left circle for his first goal of the season. Josh Passolt picked up his second assist of the year on the goal and Drew Worrad tallied his first.

Omaha struck twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead before Frank struck on the power play. The Nebraska native punched in a rebound on a shot by freshman defenseman Daniel Hilsendager for his first of the season. The assist was Hilsendager's first collegiate point.

The Mavericks scored again to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.

Omaha added six more goals in the final 20 minutes to put the game out of reach. Freshman goalie Alex Aslanidis made his collegiate debut midway through the period, making eight saves.

Western Michigan is back in action on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against No. 1 North Dakota. The game can be streamed live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
