Hockey Wins Second Straight After Downing CC, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Western Michigan hockey team picked up its second straight win after a 5-2 win over Colorado College at the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Pod in Baxter Arena on Friday night.

Senior goalie Austin Cain made 30 saves on the night to pick up his second win of the year, while senior forward and Nebraska native Ethen Frank had two power play goals to lead the team. Sophomore defenseman Ronnie Attard and junior forward Drew Worrad each had two assists on the night. The Broncos (2-3-1, 2-3-1-0-0-0 NCHC) also picked up goals from freshman forward Luke Grainger, senior forward Josh Passolt and sophomore forward Jason Polin.

WMU struck first on Frank's first power play goal of the game late in the first period. Junior defenseman Michael Joyaux found Frank in the left circle and Frank fired a rocket under the arm of CC goalie Matt Vernon and into the net for his second goal of the season with 47 seconds left in the period.

The Tigers tied it up at 1-1 with a very early goal in the second period at 1:23 after defenseman Brian Yoon jammed in a puck that was loose in the crease after a save by Cain.

WMU scored five straight goals to pull away, with three in the second period. The first came at 6:05 by Grainger. The freshman punched in a rebound at the left of the crease off a shot by sophomore Scooter Brickey for his first collegiate goal. Fellow freshman and linemate Jarred White tallied an assist, the first point of his collegiate career. Brickey tallied his second helper of the season on the goal, as well.

Passolt netted the eventual game-winner at 9:26. Freshman defenseman Aidan Fulp fired a shot on net and Passolt, with his back to the net, put the puck between his legs and into the goal for his third of the season. Attard picked up his first assist on the night, his third, and Fulp tallied his fourth.

Polin pushed the lead to 4-1 with 3.6 seconds left in the second period. Attard fired a shot that was blocked and popped up into the air. The Philadelphia Flyers' draft pick gloved it down back to the ice and found Polin on the left edge of the right circle for the one-timer and Polin buried it for his second goal of the season. Attard picked up his fourth assist, as did Passolt on the goal.

Frank sealed the win with his second of the night and second on the power play at 12:20 in the third period. Ty Glover found him open in the slot and he ripped it off the cross bar and in for his third of the season.

CC's Jack Millar added a power play goal with 14 seconds left in the game to cut the lead to 5-2.

WMU finished the night 2-for-3 on the power play, with Colorado College going 1-for-3. The Tigers outshot the Broncos 32-29 on the night.

Western Michigan continues play in the NCHC Pod on Sunday against No. 1 North Dakota at 5:05 p.m.
