OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Michigan hockey team had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped after a 6-3 loss to No. North Dakota in its seventh game of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Pod on Sunday evening at Baxter Arena.
Â
The Broncos picked up goals from
Ethen Frank,
Brett Van Os and
Drew Worrad but were unable to keep up with the Fighting Hawks on the night.
Â
UND jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two goals in the second-half of the first period and one early in the third. Freshman Riese Gaber scored his first of two goals at 13:39 on the power play to take the initial lead. Gavin Hain scored with 2:24 remaining in the first period to send the Broncos to the first intermission down, 2-0. Jacob Bernard-Docker netted his first goal of the season at 7:46 in the second period to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
The Broncos struck back with 1:59 left in the period on Frank's team-leading fourth goal of the season. Frank got a pass from Worrad and had a two-on-one rush on the other end. Frank went to the toe-drag in the right circle and then ripped it past UND goalie Adam Scheel to cut the lead to 3-1.
Â
Van Os scored his third of the season to cut the lead to one at 5:02 in the third period. Worrad and
Cole Gallant were battling down below the UND net and won the puck. Gallant then found Van Os, fresh off the bench, streaking into the slot and he punched it in the net. Gallant, who also had assisted on Frank's goal, picked up his third helper of the season and Worrad tallied his team-leading fifth.
Â
The Fighting Hawks struck back just 27 second later on Gaber's second of the night.
Â
Worrad redirected a shot by Frank past Scheel for his first goal of the season to cut the lead to 5-3 with 5:36 left to go. Worrad won the draw after an icing call on UND back to sophomore defenseman
Ronnie Attard. Attard dished it over to Frank, who fired a shot from the top of the right circle. Worrad was in the slot and redirected the shot past Scheel.
Â
WMU pulled senior goalie
Austin Cain from the net to get the extra attacker in the final minutes but Jasper Weatherby sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 43 seconds remaining.
Â
Western Michigan was outshot 27-23 and held scoreless on four power plays.
