COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan freshman defenseman Ronnie Attard and freshman goalie Brandon Bussi have both earned Bauer National Collegiate Hockey Conference weekly honors. Attard has been named Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week, with Bussi earning Bauer NCHC Goalie of the Week honors.
Both were instrumental in WMU's sweep of St. Cloud State over the weekend, the first sweep of the Huskies in program history.
Attard had three points on the weekend in the pair of 6-2 wins. On Friday he sealed the victory over SCSU with a 200-foot empty-net goal in the third period to push the lead to 6-2. On Saturday he gave the Broncos an early 1-0 lead at 2:47 in the
first period with his sixth goal of the season. He then helped set up Michael Joyaux's goal at 12:41 in the first period, giving WMU a 2-0 lead. Attard collects his second NCHC weekly honors of his career, earning NCHC Defenseman of the Week back on Nov. 4.
Bussi earns the first honors of his career after allowing just four goals on the weekend, two in each win. On Friday he was called on to make just 19 saves but had a game-high 25 on Saturday, including 11 in the first period. On the weekend he helped WMU's penalty kill go a perfect 6-for-6.
Western Michigan heads out on the road this weekend to Omaha to take on the Mavs on Friday and Saturday. Friday's puck drop is at 8:37 p.m. and will mark WMU's CBS Sports Network season debut. Saturday's game starts at 8:07 p.m. and can be seen streamed on NCHC.tv. The Broncos return home on Feb. 7-8 to host RPI.
