CLEVELAND -Â The Western Michigan women's tennis team has swept the first Mid-American Conference weekly honors of the 2020 campaign. Freshman
Lindsey Zieglar was named the Singles Player of the Week, and she also earned Doubles Team of the Week accolades with senior
Gabriela Slavova.Â
Zieglar won her first collegiate dual singles match on Saturday, defeating Victoria Kurz from Oakland in a third set tie-break (6-7, 6-1, 7-6). Her win secured the fourth and decisive point for her team, as the Broncos opened their season with a 4-3 victory over the Golden Grizzlies in Kalamazoo.Â
Zieglar teamed up with Slavova against Oakland, prevailing over Nirva Patel and Victoria Kurz by a 6-4 score at #3 doubles. Their win helped the Broncos earn the doubles point over the Golden Grizzlies.
Â
This marks the first time that Slavova has earned MAC weekly honors in her collegiate career, while Zieglar is the first Western Michigan freshman to be named the MAC Singles Player of the Week since
Olivia Myers did so back in 2015.
Western Michigan will travel to Chicago this Friday for a non-conference contest against DePaul at 8 p.m. ET.Â
