KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team competed at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill., and the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., to start its 2019 fall competitive schedule this weekend.
In singles action at Bradley, sophomore
Kaitlyn Rogosch, sophomore
Elizabeth Trupp and junior
Jeryn Jack all won first round matches in their respective draws on Friday against student-athletes from St. Louis and Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Rogosch would go on to place fourth in the Bradley bracket, while Trupp lost to Nina Marjanovic from Bradley in the #2 final of the red bracket.
In doubles play, Rogosch and Jack defeated Alana Bourgeois and Maniluz Rojo from St. Louis in the first round of the red bracket by a score of 8-6, eventually finishing fourth out of the eight teams involved. Trupp competed in the doubles white bracket with Kinga Kovacs from Bradley, but they withdrew from the consolation semifinal round due to an injury.
At the Wolverine Invitational, Western Michigan opened singles play against Michigan State on Friday, with senior
Gabriela Slavova taking Nicole Stephens to three sets in a loss. Junior
Valerie Riegraf forced extra play in the second set of her match against Jennifer Timotin before falling by set scores of 3-6, 5-7. Later in the day, the Broncos began doubles action against the host team from Michigan, with both teams facing 4-6 setbacks.
On day two of the competition, sophomore
Kristina Tiraspolsky earned the Broncos first win of the tournament, defeating Lanie Van Linge from Michigan 7-6,7-6. In doubles, WMU took on teams from Arizona State, with Tiraspolsky teaming up with freshman
Lindsey Zieglar, while Riegraf was partnered with Slavova.
Western Michigan finished its schedule in Ann Arbor on Sunday with four singles contests against Charlotte and two doubles matches against Yale.
The Broncos will resume their fall competitive schedule next weekend at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
