Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan enters its home tournament with an overall record of 8-1 after going 2-1 last weekend in Milwaukee at the Panther Invitational. The 8-1 start for the Broncos is the best start to a season since 1996.
Reilly Named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week….again
For the third consecutive week, senior
Kathleen Reilly was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. Reilly at the Panther Invitational collected 60 digs including 30 in a five-set victory over Butler.
Bontrager close to 1,000 career kills
Junior outside hitter
Rachel Bontrager is just seven kills away from reaching 1,000 for her career. The Valparaiso, Ind., native can become the 25
th player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill mark.
Reilly 2K
Reilly heading into the weekend is just 70 digs away from reaching 2,000 for her career. Reilly ranks third on WMU's career digs list and can become just the third player in program history to eclipse the 2,000 digs mark.
Big Names Coming to Kalamazoo
Western Michigan hosts Auburn from the SEC and Michigan State from the Big Ten this weekend. It's the first time an SEC school has visited Kalamazoo since Tennessee back in 2016. The Spartans become the first Big Ten school to play inside University Arena since Northwestern in 2013.
First Set Success
Western Michigan is 7-0 this season when winning the first set. The Broncos have lost the first set only once this season.
Scouting the Competition
IUPUI - IUPUI heads into the weekend coming off a 2-1 performance last weekend at the Southern Illinois Tournament. The Jaguars began the weekend with wins over Southern Illinois and Alabama State before falling to Memphis in the tournament finale. Most recently, IUPUI was swept by Indiana State on Tuesday.
Auburn - Auburn has won three of its last four matches to propel its overall record to .500. At the Add-Ran Cup in Fort Worth, Texas last weekend, the Tigers defeated Miami in four sets before falling to TCU in five. The weekend prior, Auburn went 2-1 at the Miami Invitational with victories over South Florida and George Washington.
Michigan State - Michigan State is riding a two-match winning streak and has won four of its last five matches heading into the weekend. Last week the Spartans notched a pair of sweeps, defeating Oakland last Thursday and North Carolina on Sunday.
