KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team fell late to No. 18 Kansas, 2-0, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Bronco (2-4-0) defense had held strong and goalkeeper Maggie Rogers finished with a career-high 13 saves but the Jayhawks (7-1-0) finally broke through at 79:43 in the second half when Chais Wright kicked in a rebound to take a 1-0 lead.
Just 46 seconds later Samantha Barnett scored on a shot from distance to push the lead to 2-0.
After being held without a shot in the first half, Western Michigan had its moments of pressure in the second, getting off five overall shots. The first attempt came early in the half on a set piece that resulted in a point-blank header by Rachel Royer. KU goalie Sarah Peters made the save to keep the Broncos off the board.
Later in the 74th minute Western Michigan had a chance off of some combination play on the counter attack. Grace Labadie had the ball in the left corner and crossed it to Bailey Korhorn. The junior forward got her head on it but it just went wide of the post. It was one of two chances in the half by Korhorn, with Otteson and Bosworth also getting chances that missed the mark.
Western Michigan keeps its homestand going, hosting Loyola-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
